How to Hydrate Properly this Summer

How to Hydrate Properly this Summer
During the heat of summer, it is essential for us to ensure our body is receiving the right amount of liquid to hydrate properly. Our body naturally goes into the sweat mode when it is too hot outside and tries to cool the body and offset the temperature. While we sweat, we lose quite a lot of liquid as well as electrolytes.

There is always a rise and fall in our electrolytes and trace minerals depending on our activity and the situation we are in. We need to either supplement or get our trace minerals from a healthy diet as our body doesn’t make the trace minerals. Most athletes know of the benefits of adding electrolytes to their pre or post-workout drinks which prevents muscle cramp and relieves the symptoms of dehydration, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Irritability and lack of focus
  • Tiredness
  • Dry skin and lips
  • High heart rate but low blood pressure
  • Dark urin
  • Lack of appetite

How to hydrate properly:

Hydration is a key factor to reduce the toxin overload, ensure the lymphatic system is flowing and cells are getting their nutrients. During the summer months we often tend to drink more, but sometimes plain water isn't enough. Adding a good electrolyte containing trace minerals, such as Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium and Calcium, can be beneficial to our bodies.
These minerals ensure:

  • proper muscle functions
  • help with tissue formation and bone health
  • support healthy hair, skin and nails
  • support the immune function

Most electrolyte products, however, contain additives and preservatives. Anything from sugar to artificial flavors and colors are added to enhance the taste. Even though sugar and sugar alternatives can make the drinks taste better, they contribute to our body’s overall negative pH-level. A negative pH balance shows that our body is acidic, mostly due to our day-to-day stress, food we eat, overload on metabolic and environmental toxins, lack of a healthy sleep, and proper hydration. By adding an electrolyte with added sugar, we are contributing to over acidifying our body.

An acidic body state has shown to be the culprit for conditions, such as allergic conditions, digestive and respiratory issues, lack of energy, cellulites, skin conditions, chronic inflammations; especially joints/arthritis pain, cardio-vascular conditions, and osteoporosis as the body tries to balance out its overall acidity and leaks mineral from the bones into the body. Quite a few reasons to grab the
right form of electrolytes!

Be sure to drink your water and electrolytes sip by sip throughout the day. This helps the water to reach every cell rather than flushing the body, which you do when you drink a whole bottle of water at once.
